Collection consists primarily of letters, 1861-1864, from James Dearing, a general in the Confederate States Army, to his wife, Roxanna (Birchett) Dearing, while he served in Virginia and North Carolina. There are also letters, ca. 1920-1924, from Morris Schaff, biographer of Jefferson Davis and former roommate of James Dearing, to his daughter, Mary Lucretia (Dearing) Christian concerning her father and the South. Also included is a small amount of correspondence of other Birchett, Dearing, and Christian family members.
